Show me what you're working on. I'll help you get the Dutch side sorted.

I'm Joel van Valkenhoef. I've worked professionally in translation and localization since 2005, across text, digital content, audiovisual work and newer AI-driven language workflows.

Tell me what you're working on

Send me the file, website, video, draft or simply the situation.

Tell me what you want to achieve, and we can work out the right next step from there.

Start with what you have.

Sometimes you already know exactly what you need. Sometimes you have a website, a video, some subtitles, an existing translation, an AI-generated draft or a project that is still taking shape.

And sometimes you simply have an idea you'd like to explore.

Maybe you're weighing different options, wondering what's possible, or just want to talk something through before deciding what to do next.

Send me what you have, or tell me what you're thinking, and we can work out where to take it.

Working out the right approach is part of the job.

A laptop, a phone, headphones, a notebook and a handwritten page laid out on a table.

What do you have right now?

Pick anything that applies. It goes straight into your message.

Show me the problem. We can work out what it needs from there.

What can you hand me?

Quite a lot, actually.

If Dutch is part of the project, send me the whole picture.

Full video translation

Hand over a complete video and I take care of the Dutch from start to finish: what is said, what is on screen and how it should read or sound for a Dutch audience.

Mixed and evolving projects

Projects involving several formats, several specialists or requirements that naturally cross service categories.

Send me the whole picture

If I can take something off your hands, I will.

I like taking ownership of the practical details around the work.

A translator's workstation by a canal-house window: a main monitor with a subtitle timeline, a second screen with two columns of text, keyboard, mouse and studio headphones.

I take ownership

If a file needs sorting, an answer needs finding, another specialist needs involving or there's a simpler route through the project, I'll handle what I can and keep things moving.

Straight answers

I'm straightforward about scope, timing and what I think will work best. When another specialist is the right fit for part of a project, I'll help connect the dots.

Direct collaboration

I like working directly with the people behind a project: understanding what they're trying to achieve, making sensible decisions together and then getting on with it.

Good collaboration should feel clear, easy and useful.

A collage of the year 2005: a games console, a flip phone and a music player, a web search bar and map pin, an early social network page, a chat window, and scenes from the television, sport and music of that year.

I've been doing this since 2005.

I started working professionally in translation in 2005 and have spent the years since translating, editing, reviewing, localizing and helping coordinate language work across a wide range of industries and formats.

My experience includes business and marketing content, websites, software, eLearning, multimedia, subtitles, dubbing workflows, linguistic QA and AI-assisted language work.

I've worked directly with companies, agencies, project teams and other language professionals: producing language work, reviewing it, and helping bring the right people together around larger projects.

That range gives me a broad view of both the language itself and the wider project around it.

Language doesn't always live on a page.

A significant part of my work involves subtitling, dubbing, scripts, voice-over material and audiovisual QA.

That can mean translating, adapting dialogue, reviewing subtitle files, checking timing and context, working with dubbing material or looking at the finished product as a whole.

For audiovisual projects, I like seeing the wider project early. The more context I have, the more useful I can be.

Have a complete video that needs to become Dutch? Send me the whole video and I'll return it in Dutch.

AI is changing language work. The interesting part is knowing where it helps.

A Delftware tile panel in which hand-painted flowers and vines gradually turn into circuit traces and a network of connected nodes.

I find AI genuinely fascinating, and I spend a lot of time working with it and keeping up with how quickly the technology is developing.

I think healthy skepticism and genuine optimism can coexist.

What interests me is practical: what can AI already do extremely well, where does it save time, where can it improve a workflow, and where do experience and human judgment still make the difference?

Working closely with these tools gives me a good sense of that boundary.

Sometimes AI is clearly the best tool for part of a process. Sometimes an impressive first result becomes less convincing when you look more closely. And sometimes the strongest result comes from combining the technology with somebody who understands the language, context and wider purpose of the work.

Where judgment makes the difference

For me, the useful question is:What role should AI play in this particular project?

And if the project gets bigger?

Dutch is my own language specialization, but projects often involve more than one language, discipline or specialist.

Tell me about the whole project. I've worked with people across the language industry for many years and can often help work out who should handle what, bring the right people together or point you towards someone I trust.

Sometimes the most useful thing I can do is connect the right people and keep the project moving.

About me

I come from a Dutch-American family, grew up mostly in Europe and have lived and worked across several countries.

I've built my career around language, but my interests have always reached well beyond translation: people, technology, communication, business, and language itself as something to play with as well as work with.

I enjoy getting close enough to a project to understand what people are actually trying to achieve. I like solving practical problems, connecting people who can help each other and learning enough about the wider picture to be genuinely useful.

That curiosity is also what has taken my work from traditional translation into localization, audiovisual work, technology and AI.

I still enjoy language for its own sake: wordplay, quizzes, visual riddles and the strange connections between words and ideas.

I also speakEnglishDeutschEspañol

Language is my professional specialty. Making things easier for the people I work with is the broader theme.
