Dutch subtitle review and QC.

Existing Dutch subtitles checked against the video before they go live: translation, timing, readability and context.

What a subtitle review covers.

A subtitle review, or subtitle QC, is a check of Dutch subtitles that already exist, whether a translator made them, an agency or an automatic tool. I watch the video with the subtitles, compare them with what is said and correct what is wrong or awkward. You get subtitles you can publish, and a clear idea of how good the originals were.

Subtitles get made in many ways now: by translators, by agencies working at speed and, more and more, by automatic tools. However they were produced, the viewer only sees the result. A review is the step that catches what would otherwise go out on screen.

I can correct the file directly, or report what I find and leave the changes to your team.

  • Translation checked against the spoken source
  • Timing: subtitles that appear and leave with the speech
  • Reading speed and line length
  • Line breaks, spelling and punctuation
  • Names, terms and on-screen text kept consistent

How it works.

  1. You send the video and the subtitles

With the source-language subtitles or script, if they exist.

  2. I watch a sample

And tell you what state the subtitles are in and what a full review involves.

  3. I review against the picture

Line by line, with the video running.

  4. You get corrected subtitles

And a short summary of the kinds of problems I found.

What goes wrong in subtitles.

The commonest faults are not spelling mistakes. They are subtitles that follow the transcript word for word and cannot be read in time, lines broken in the middle of a phrase, a joke or a reference that no longer lands, and a mistranslation that only shows when you watch the scene.

Automatic subtitles add their own: misheard names, missing punctuation and timing that drifts.

Questions people ask.

Can you review subtitles made by an automatic tool or AI?

Yes. Automatically generated and machine-translated subtitles are a growing part of this work. After a sample I'll tell you whether they are worth correcting or quicker to redo.

Do you need the video, or is the subtitle file enough?

I need the video. Whether a subtitle is right depends on what is said and shown at that moment, and timing cannot be judged from a text file.

Will you change the subtitles or only report problems?

Whichever you prefer. I can correct the file directly, or deliver a list of issues for your own team to apply.

Can you review subtitles in a language other than Dutch?

Dutch is my own language specialization. For other languages I can often point you towards someone I trust.
